The United Way of Northern Arizona is recruiting an accomplished, compassionate, collaborative, President/CEO to lead our work in northern Arizona.  Founded more than 50 years ago, the United Way of Northern Arizona is committed to “Improving lives by mobilizing communities to create lasting changes in community conditions.”

The Work

We seek a visionary, innovative, change agent to work with our Board and staff to achieve our goals and exceed our community impact:


Engage as a partner in community-based initiatives.

  • Actively foster community partnerships to maximize the use of resources and sharing of best practices.
  • Understand the roles and contributions of all sectors of the community and can mobilize resources (financial and human) through meaningful engagement.  
  • Successfully navigates the complex dynamics of local, regional, and national environment.
  •  Is influential and exercises United Way’s unique position to generate interest and passion for investing in community.


Communicate the passion and purpose of the United Way of Northern Arizona by engaging with city and county leaders, nonprofit partners, workplace partners, prospective individual and institutional donors, and the collective northern Arizona communities.

  • Foster an inclusive culture, built on commitment, trust and collaboration, that actively engages diverse partners and stakeholders in meaningful ways. 
  • Understand that people come before process. Cultivate and manage relationships towards a common goal.

Possess a high-level of business acumen, fundraising, and management skills to provide capacity and strength to critical, mission-focused initiatives in Northern Arizona.

  • Effective at generating and growing financial support, raising funds by building a solid foundation of invested stakeholders.
  • Engages and educates donors and volunteers to motivate their contributions and resources to advance the mission
  • Values team and its collective achievement. Ensures the right people are in the right roles at the right times. Empowers others through mentorship and guidance and celebrates the success of others.
  • Maintain the highest degree of financial integrity and transparency in administering accounting principles and practices.

The Details

Minimum Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience, is required; a Master’s degree in business, social sciences, education, nonprofit management, or a related field is strongly preferred.


  • Extensive experience developing and managing high-performing volunteer leadership boards and committees, cultivating, and sustaining relationships with major gift donors, corporate and private foundations as well as supervising and cultivating the talents of high-performing staff
  • 10 years’ experience in transformational management and/or leadership 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively work with diverse communities in a variety of settings 
  • Advanced leadership and communication abilities with which to lead organizational development success in a highly dynamic setting responsive to a complex and changing environment
  • Proven strategic leader, capable of articulating UWNA ’s vision to donors, volunteers, staff and other constituencies 
  • High-level experience in administrative management and staff supervision, including experience working effectively with volunteers, the community, and a governing board
  • Demonstrated ability in public speaking, written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience in large scale fundraising, to include identifying and securing national and regional grants
  • Understanding of the social, economic, and political landscape of UWNA’s three -county are preferred

Salary and Benefits

  • United Way offers competitive wages and a generous benefits packet with employer contributions for full time employees including medical, dental, vision, 401K, PTO, 11 paid holidays, and opportunities for educational and professional development.
  • Starting Salary Range: $110,000 – 120,000. Salary will be dependent on applicant’s qualifications and experience.

  • Automobile use is essential; Must possess a valid driver’s license

Work Environment

  • The position is based in Flagstaff and serving Coconino, Apache and Navajo Counties.
